Canadian Lumber System

With the announcement of the move by the CLSAB and NLGA offices we would like to take this opportunity to present you with a general overview of the Canadian Lumber Quality System.

The Canadian Lumber Standards Accreditation Board is a federally incorporated no share corporation.   The Board of Directors consists of representatives from the grading agencies, Canadian lumber manufacturers, residential builders, federal government, building codes authorities, engineering testing facilities and the Canadian Housing & Mortgage Corporation.

The various Canadian Codes and Standard documents enhance the authority of CLSAB accreditation of which the primary document is the National Building Code of Canada.  Macdonald Inspection Services is proud to be an agency in Canada to be accredited by CLSAB.  The CLSAB published a document CLSAB Regulations that outlines the duties and responsibilities of the grading agencies and their mills.  Mr. Nils Larsson serves as Executive Director of CLSAB and may be contacted at the address given in the moving notice.

The National Lumber Grades Authority (NLGA) is a standard writing organization.  The NLGA Board of Directors consists of representatives from the seventeen grading agencies.  NLGA consists of a standard committee and a grading rule committee with representation from agencies, industry and technical advisors.  The Standards committee is responsible for special product standards for such items as MSR, MEL and fingerjoined products.  The grading rule committee is responsible for publishing the NLGA Standard Grading Rules for Canadian Lumber.  The above-mentioned committees answer to an Executive Committee, which in turn takes the recommendations to the NLGA Board of Directors for approval.

Mr. Al Rozek is the Executive Director of the NLGA.

Rob Finch, President of Macdonald Inspection Services Ltd. will represent this agency and its mills at these meetings.
