CLSAB – ALSC First Survey

The Canadian Lumber Standard Accreditation Board and American Lumber Standard Committee have

completed their first survey of our agency this year.  We are please to report that for the first survey among

Canadian agencies we rated very high.  CLSAB by means of a coding system, allows us to see how we

compare to the other Canadian Grading agencies without disclosing names of other agencies.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the graders of our grade stamp client mills

for maintaining this achievement.

The CLSAB and ALSC normally conduct 2 surveys a year on all Canadian agencies, taking a percentile at       random to determine which mills they will visit.

For more information on MI please visit our website at www.gradestamp.com

Changes in SPS 2 MSR Procedures

Changes were made to the NLGA Special Products Standard for Machine Graded Lumber (SPS 2) in regard to number of qualification samples required for MSR grades.   There was also a change in the definition of Knots other than edge.  These amendments were made to comply with ASTM D 6570.

Changes in SPS 1 and SPS 3

This September 2002 the NLGA Board of Directors have approved changes to the NLGA Special Products Standard for Fingerjoined Lumber SPS 1 and SPS 3

The most significant change is in dropping the requirement of meeting the “running average bending strength.”  The maintenance of the “5 percentile bending strength” and the “characteristic minimum bending strength“ is still required.  There were some minor adjustments in the characteristic strength properties listed in the standards.

These standards will be revised and come into effect at the end of this year.  New printings will be distributed to all FJ facilities at that time.

HT-KD-HT Stamps

The demand for HT and KD-HT stamps continue to grow.  As an accredited grading agency by American Lumber Standards Committee (ALSC) these stamps are recognized by American pallet manufactures and other ALSC accredited grading agency facilities as meeting the European Union (EU) requirements for pasteurization of wood products imported into these countries.

Any facility may apply for HT or KD-HT stamps by having an accredited grading agency verify their kiln schedules to meet the requirement of this program.

Remanufacturing facilities may also apply for HT or KD-HT stamp but may only apply stamps to lumber labeled HT or KD-HT from original mills.  Strict inventory control shall be required to segregate treated and untreated lumber in the facility’s yard.
